Kalamazoo Sports Take On Albion
The Kalamazoo Hornets went 1-1-1 against small-school rival Albion College this week, as both the men’s and women’s soccer teams and the volleyball team faced the Britons in league matches.
The Kalamazoo College Hornets rallied to win the last two sets Tuesday night, Oct. 6, sealing a hotly-contested five-set victory over the Albion Britons.
The Hornets lost two of the first three sets but their confidence and enthusiasm never wavered.
“We really focused on trusting each other and believing we could do it,” said Sarah Thomasma K’10.
The trust paid off as the Hornets won a tightly contested fourth set 25-22 to force the deciding fifth set.
The Hornets came out in the fifth set focused, quickly taking a 14-11 lead. Albion fought back to tie the set at 14 before the Hornets slammed the door with a spike by Kim Marble K’10, winning 16-14.
“We’re really pumped about the win and glad that people came out to see us,” Thomasma said.
Several Hornets contributed to the win. Colleen Leonard K’12 led the Hornets with 15 kills and 13 digs. Allison Liddane K’13 led the team with 27 assists. Marble also contributed 10 digs.
Albion fell to 12-7 and 5-4 in MIAA play. The Hornets improved to 9-11 on the season and 3-5 in MIAA play.
